Danantara: 6 new waste-to-energy projects in Indonesia

In Indonesia, Indonesia Business Post reported that Indonesia is set to accelerate its waste-to-energy push, with Danantara preparing to tender six Pengolah Sampah menjadi Energi Listrik (PSEL) projects in 2026.

The initiative forms part of a broader government plan to cut national waste volumes by up to 33,000 tons per day by 2029, equivalent to around 22.5% of total daily waste generation.

Head of the Presidential Staff Office, Muhammad Qodari, said the program would play a central role in addressing Indonesia’s mounting waste challenges. “PSEL is targeted to reduce waste by around 33,000 tons per day by 2029,” he said.

Danantara, through its subsidiary PT Denera, is expected to act as the lead agency for the upcoming tenders, signaling a more centralized and investment-driven approach to project execution.

The six projects slated for tender include Lampung Raya, Bekasi (TPA Burangkeng), Medan Raya, Semarang Raya, Surabaya Raya and Serang Raya, with a combined processing capacity of approximately 7,000 tons of waste per day.

In addition to reducing waste volumes, PSEL facilities are expected to contribute to electricity supply. A plant processing 1,000 tons of waste per day can generate around 25MW of power.
