Brazil lands IMO approval for corn-based ethanol as marine fuel

In Brazil, Bloomberg reports Brazil says its corn ethanol had overcome a major regulatory stage of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), giving the country an advantage over the U.S. and other competitors in the race to provide biofuels for shipping.

The South American country’s so-called second-crop corn ethanol is the first biofuel compatible with shipping to have its carbon footprint defined and approved by the IMO, according to Flavio Mathuiy, captain of sea and war that represents Brazil in the global regulator of the naval sector.

The London-based IMO did not immediately respond to a request for comment during a holiday in the UK.
